Finnish Makulaku Lakritsa Oy has invested into a new liquorice production line, and is planning on introducing a number of new liquorice products to the market this year. Being the most modern hybrid production line in the sector, the new system is set to make the production of liquorice products more versatile and agile than ever. The new production line will not only double the capacity of Makulaku’s production facility, but also diversify the company’s product range.
“Our goal is genuinely ambitious: the aim is to achieve strong international growth and position our colourful Makulaku products as a lively alternative to existing products on the market. The new production line will significantly boost our manufacturing agility and efficiency,” says Risto Jämsén, the CEO of the Makua Foods group, Makulaku’s parent company.
The new hybrid production line can be used to produce a wide range of products in different colours and flavours, either packed or in bulk and organic or normal. New products include extra-long liquorice strips that will be sold under the name ‘Monkey Tails’.
Organic liquorice suitable for vegans
“There is great demand in the market for organic liquorice suitable for vegans, and as far as we know Makulaku is the only company in the world to make this type of filled liquorice. Our organic products will be marketed under the ‘Happy Reindeer’ brand in all market areas,” says Jämsén.
The efficient new production line, which also includes packaging automation, will start up at the Porvoo facility in January 2017. The first products will be hitting the shelves in February, before which they will be officially unveiled at the ISM trade fair for sweets and snacks held in Cologne at the end of January and beginning of February.
During the investment project the manufacturing facility’s quality system was also updated to meet the requirements of the FSSC 22000 Food Safety System Certification. The new production line is the culmination of lengthy product development work, which has involved extensive testing, adjusting and tasting.
“It takes time to transfer all the different flavours and shapes from multiple production lines to a single line. Getting everything right requires great care, and the flavours have to be just so. Luckily we have some excellent expertise refined through years of experience in our product development team, which has played a decisive role in ensuring the success of the project,” thanks Jämsén.
